FAQs
Can I watch a class before joining?
Because our classes are built on trust, participation, and creating a safe space for everyone, we don’t normally have observers.
Many of our members are stepping well outside their comfort zone, and knowing everyone in the room is participating helps create a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.
On rare occasions, and only with the agreement of the entire class, we may allow a guest to observe.
If you’re feeling nervous, please let us know. We’d be happy to answer your questions beforehand and help you feel comfortable before your first class.
What if I don’t know what to say… or I have so many ideas I can’t choose one?
Believe it or not, both are incredibly common!
Sometimes our minds go completely blank. Other times they’re racing with so many possibilities that we can’t decide which one to say.
In improv, we affectionately call this getting “the Grip.”
The good news? We’ll teach you simple techniques that help when your mind goes blank, and equally simple ways to quickly choose an idea when you have too many.
You’ll be surprised how quickly those skills become second nature—not just in improv, but in everyday life too.
Do I need to be able to move around easily?
Not at all.
Our classes are designed to be welcoming and inclusive. We don’t use bleacher-style seating or expect participants to move quickly around the room. If you have mobility challenges, use a walker, or simply prefer to remain seated for many activities, we’ll happily adapt the exercises so you can participate comfortably.
Our goal isn’t athletic ability—it’s connection, creativity, and laughter.
Everyone deserves the chance to play, laugh, and belong. We’ll work with you to make that possible.
What if I’m nervous?
Almost everyone is.
By the end of the first class, most people are laughing, relaxing, and wondering why they waited so long.
What if I have memory issues?
Don’t worry.
There are no scripts to memorize and no lines to remember. Everything happens in the moment, and everyone supports each other along the way.
What if I can’t think of anything to say?
That’s perfectly normal—and it happens to everyone.
The good news is you’ll never be expected to come up with ideas on your own. Improv is a team activity, and your classmates will help you every step of the way.
Is there an age limit?
Our classes are designed for adults aged 55 and over.
I’m coming alone. Will that be awkward?
Not at all.
Many people attend on their own. Before long, you’ll know everyone’s name, and chances are someone will be saving you a seat.
What are the benefits?
While every person is different, many members tell us they have experienced:
New friendships
Increased confidence
Lots of laughter
Better listening skills
Improved creativity
More joy in everyday life
Something exciting to look forward to each week
Many also say they simply feel happier after class.
How physically demanding is it?
Very little.
Most activities involve standing, walking, talking and laughing. We happily adapt exercises so everyone can participate comfortably.
What should I wear?
Whatever makes you comfortable. Casual clothing and comfortable shoes are perfect.
Is improv like acting?
Improv and acting are close cousins. Many actors use improv to strengthen their listening, spontaneity, creativity, and ability to respond truthfully in the moment.
The biggest difference is that improv has no script or lines to memorize. Instead, performers use their imagination to create the story one moment at a time. That sense of discovery often makes scenes feel fresh, authentic, and engaging for both the performers and the audience.
Some people discover a passion for acting through improv, while others simply enjoy the joy of playing, laughing, and connecting with others. Wherever your journey takes you, the skills you develop through improv will stay with you for life.
Will I ever be put on the spot?
Never in a way that feels uncomfortable.
You are always encouraged, never pressured. Participation grows naturally as your confidence grows.
What if I make a mistake?
Then you’re doing improv perfectly!
There are no mistakes in improv—only opportunities. We celebrate unexpected moments because they often become the funniest and most memorable parts of class.
I’m quite shy. Is this really for me?
Yes! Many of our members joined because they wanted to step outside their comfort zone. Some even describe themselves as lifelong introverts. They stayed because they discovered a welcoming community where everyone is encouraged, never judged.
We had a participant tell the class that she identified as ‘Introverted and Repressed’. We fell in love with her immediately!
I’ve never done improv before. Will I fit in?
Absolutely. Most of our members had never tried improv before joining us. Our Level 1 classes are designed specifically for beginners, and everyone learns together in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
Do I have to be funny?
Not at all. In fact, most people tell us, “I’m not funny!” when they first arrive. The wonderful thing about improv is that you don’t need to be funny—the laughter comes naturally when people support one another and enjoy the moment together.
I’m not sure this is for someone like me.
If you’ve been feeling isolated…
If you’d like to meet new people…
If you’d like to laugh a little more…
If you’re looking for something that gives you a reason to get out of the house…
Then yes.
You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be outgoing.
You don’t need to be funny.
You simply need to come as you are.
We’ll take it from there.
Still wondering if Seniors Improv is right for you?
The best way to find out is to join us for an introductory session. You don’t have to be funny. You don’t have to be confident. You don’t have to know anyone. You simply have to show up. We’ll take care of the rest.
